Santa Photos That Sleigh: 4 Ways to Capture the Magic this Christmas
Before I started at CostumeBox, I worked as a Photo Assistant at a professional Santa photo company for two years.
From fun costumes, pet photos, to exciting announcements, there was never a dull moment.
Even in the chaos of the Christmas rush, I thoroughly enjoyed assisting families and groups select the photographs they would cherish for the years ahead.
So if you’re looking to make some fun memories this silly season, here are my top suggestions for a unique take on traditional Santa photos.
Dress Up
Family photo sent to us by Asha, one of our happy customers.
Whether it was matching t-shirts or pyjamas, each time a family arrived at the Santa set in their finest festive gear, I found it instantly added more fun to the photographs and the overall experience.
Working with these groups was always a joy and really enhanced the Christmas spirit for everyone involved.
If you love Santa and Christmas as much as Buddy the Elf, I encourage you to take it up a notch and get everyone in costume for your Santa photos. Transform into a reindeer, snowman, or maybe even The Grinch? It’s all about having fun and making lasting memories.
Pets Are Family Too
My favourite sessions to be part of were undoubtedly the pet Santa photos - pets sure know how to work the camera.
From rabbits to puppies, I saw them all at our Santa shoots, even a sweet bird that happily perched itself on Santa’s shoulder.
Whether it’s a photo with the whole family, or their solo moment with Santa, I highly recommend dressing your fur babies in costume, or simply pop a festive bow on their collar.
And don’t forget to bring a squeaky toy or treat that’ll get your pets looking straight at the camera.
Pet Santa photos are sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face and will certainly become a photograph that’ll take pride of place on the mantelpiece year after year.
Please note: Pet Santa photos may not be available at all locations. Please check with your local centre or venue before planning your visit.
A Christmas Announcement
Why not get Santa to be part of your festive announcement?
I remember a lovely couple who arrived for a session with adorable baby announcement signs and props to incorporate in their photographs.
Christmas is all about family and making memories, so what better time to announce that you’re expecting a little bundle of joy?
I also suggest bringing your own keepsakes of ultrasound photos or newborn onesies to add that personal touch to the photos.
And if you’re tying the knot, Santa can help out too.
Make sure you show off that fabulous ring and get Santa to hold some fun props like a letter board or framed chalkboard.
With special moments like these, I would recommend purchasing a beautiful glass frame to transform your Santa photo into a delightful keepsake to treasure for years to come.
Santa At Home
Santa (and a few candy cane treats) can’t impress everyone, and although I did find the candid crying moments to be a fun choice in photographs, I generally suggested these photos for a funny memory to look back on when they’re eighteen.
To generate some smiles, my go-to was bubbles, which was hit and miss. So, if your child has a favourite toy or stuffed animal, definitely bring it in and let them hold it for the photo.
But if your kiddos are just not having it with Santa at the centre, opt for Santa at home.
Get someone to dress up as Santa, find a nice backdrop (or style your own) and have your little ones feeling comfortable and ever so merry and bright.
For optimal lighting conditions, I recommend natural light outdoors, or next to a window when indoors.
Be sure to set the timer on your phone or camera, so everyone can join in the photo.
