Make a Cousin IT Trick-or-Treat Bucket (with Diary of Despina)

Make a Cousin IT Trick-or-Treat Bucket (with Diary of Despina)

When she's not occupied with her professional pursuits, she channels her creative energy into curating mesmerizing, elaborate displays that enchant both her family and online followers.

You’ll need:

Plastic Halloween bucket (remove the handle to start)

Macramé cord (for the “hair”)

Top hat

Costume glasses

Black ribbon (to hang the hat)

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Scissors

Utility knife

Safety first:

Keep fingers clear of hot glue and the knife. Cut away from your body.

Steps:

1. Prep the bucket

Pop off the bucket handle.

2. Cut the first “hair” strand

Hold a piece of macramé cord against the bucket so it hangs well past the bottom (you’ll trim later). Cut this first piece - this is your template.

3. Batch-cut strands

Use that template to cut a big handful of long strands. You can always trim - longer is safer than shorter.

4. Glue the first row (the hairline)

Run a short bead of hot glue along the inner of the bucket. Press the top ends of several cords into the glue so they hang down the bucket. Keep moving around the rim in small sections until you’ve covered the full circumference.

5. Add fullness

Lift all the long cords up and place them inside the bucket to expose the plastic again. Cut some shorter lengths of cord and hot-glue a second staggered row to cover the entire bucket. Drop the long cords back down.

6. Install the glasses

Choose the “face” side and part the hair. Mark where the glasses arms should go. Carefully make two small slits with the Stanley knife. Feed the glasses arms through, close them inside the bucket, positioning the hair around the frames.

7. Make the sliding hat

On the top hat, cut a small hole on each side. Thread the black ribbon through both holes so the hat hangs on the ribbon and can slide. Bring each ribbon end down into the bucket on opposite sides and hot-glue the ends to the inside wall. Leave enough ribbon slack so you can slide the hat up or down to sit just above the glasses.

8. Trim the hair

Let the cords fall naturally. Give Cousin IT a tidy haircut with scissors so the ends are even and safe for walking.

9. Finish with a Wednesday costume for the complete look!

That’s it! Spooky-cute Cousin IT ready to collect sweets!
