It’s been 82 years since the Wizard of Oz film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy, dazzled our screens and won our hearts. Did you know that one of the two original Dorothy dresses Judy Garland wore went missing for decades? (The only other one sold for $1.56m in 2015!) The missing dress was only recently found at a college in DC during renovations. It stands to reason that the Dorothy costume and the Wizard of Oz is a timeless classic that spans the love of generations and will continue for more to come.

With Book Week 2021 fast approaching, it is only fitting that we should a-dress the relevance of this recent rediscovery. How does CostumeBox’s own brand Dorothy-inspired dress compare to this original that Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz?

Well we don't like to blow our own trumpet, but pretty darn well we think! We nailed the pinafore dress style, including the high neck puffed sleeved blouse plus the matching gingham hair bows.

Differences

We admit, we totally missed the strip of fabric at the bottom of the dress that runs the gingham print in the opposite direction and separates the banded hem. We also took some liberties by adding its own petticoat with broderie anglaise lace trim peeking out from below. Why? Because it's swishy and gorgeous! After all, it's our own version of Dorothy inspired by L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

Fun Fact: Did you know the original slippers in L. Frank Baum’s book were actually silver shoes? It wasn’t until the film version that the ruby red slippers were introduced but they sure are iconic!
