I'm a big one for a themed party. But how do you choose a great party theme? A very valid jumping-off point for choosing a party theme is the “What I Want To Wear” method. Some great parties I've created or attended were born from the single idea of what the host wanted to wear. At your own event, you should look like the star of the show.
Black and White (with a dash of Red!)
I have two girlfriends who both wanted to wear knock-out red dresses to their respective significant birthdays - but they wanted to make sure they were the only ones wearing knock-out red dresses! Thus a clever and oh-so-chic “Black & White” theme was concocted for the guest's dress code. The effect was fabulous and the guests not only all looked incredible, but they were also very happy to be creating an incredible backdrop for the birthday girls to glow.
Dopamine Dressing
My own 50th was not so much about what I wanted to wear, but what I wanted to see my guests wear. Whilst Eastern Australia was still in our second long, sad winter lockdown, the Northern Hemisphere was emerging from theirs and the summer movie awards were on. The traditional black, gold and pastel Oscars gowns gave way to vivid citrus yellows, oranges, hot pink and lime green creations. I think this was the birth of the “Dopamine Dressing” trend, and I was addicted.
I immediately started (optimistically) planning my Sydney summer 50th birthday party- and I decided on an “Amalfi Coast” theme that would inspire people to don their brightest citrus colours and florals for a post lockdown pick-me-up. The Amalfi theme also gave me licence to go nuts with all things Italian which I love, and the flowers were glorious!
I am not alone in favouring this method of party theme selection. A quick poll of our office confirmed that basing your party theme on your intended outfit is a pretty popular way to choose a party theme:
Marketing Manager - 1920s
Our marketing manager loves flapper dresses and so has chosen the ever-elegant 1920s theme for two different birthdays. What's more, she says she will likely do it again!
Buying Manager - Scottoberfest
Our buying manager's husband, Scott, had a fabulous pair of our Authentic Leather Lederhosen … his birthday also happens to also be in October, thus Scottoberfest was born.
What outfit did you base your party on? We’d love to hear your outfit/party theme story.
