Hawaiian Theme Party: How To Plan A Hawaiian Luau Party

Author Gonzalo / Posts / Published: 28/1/2020

Do you want to know how to plan a Hawaiian Luau party in your garden? Luaus are held in Hawaii to celebrate big events, such as weddings or anniversaries, and can go on for days! One of the centrepieces of these celebrations is a roasted pig cooked in a pit, but that might be too much for your backyard Luau party!

A Hawaiian Luau party, however, is really easy to put together and it’s a very popular theme for backyard parties. It’s perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, pool parties, engagements, and just getting together with friends. All you need are plenty of Hawaiian party decorations and the right music to create a tropical atmosphere, as well as a Hawaiian party outfit and masses of fabulous Hawaiian inspired food and drinks!

How to plan a Hawaiian Luau party

  1. One of the best ways to start planning your Hawaiian theme party is to send out invitations, as this will give you the number of guests to expect. You can also ask them to wear a Hawaiian party outfit, adding another level to your party atmosphere. To stay with the theme of your party and add an extra element of excitement, why not send your guests invitations in the shape of a pineapple? You can also find lots of different invitations online that include the words ALOHA or JOIN US FOR A LUAU PARTY written on them.

After the invitations, there are four more steps to creating your fabulous tropical Luau party:

    1. Plan a food and drinks menu
    2. Source Hawaiian party decorations to create the right Luau ambience
    3. Organise your own Hawaiian party outfit
    4. Select Hawaiian music and find some good Hawaiian dance moves
    5.

Let’s look at each of these steps, in turn, so you know exactly how to plan a Hawaiian Luau party in your backyard.

Food and drinks for your Hawaiian theme party

Since the main course for an authentic Hawaiian party is a roasted pig cooked in a pit, you might want to focus on pork dishes, rather than dig a pit in your garden! Seafood is also another big deal in these celebrations, so think about both pork and seafood dishes.

For your Hawaiian theme party, you could serve pulled pork instead of roasted pork, because it’s easier and goes with salads, sandwiches, burgers and wraps. Fish and seafood can be cooked on the barbie, and you can even include Hawaiian pizzas with pineapple and pork, as well as pineapple kebabs. Don’t forget fruit platters and pineapple cupcakes and you are nearly ready!

Drinks can include fruity cocktails, such as Pina Coladas, Mai Tais and Daiquiris, both with and without alcohol. Fruit smoothies are great for kids, and you can use hollowed-out pineapples and coconuts to serve the drinks. You can even make a big volcano punch by using dry ice!

How to decorate a Hawaiian party

To create the right type of atmosphere for your Luau party you need a host of tropical and beach-inspired Hawaiian party decorations. If you have a pool and palm trees in your garden, you are halfway there, because you can throw beach balls and other floaties in the pool. Add a Tiki bar and some Tiki torches and you are practically on point!

Your Hawaiian party decorations can also include large platters of fruit with a juicy pineapple in the centre, strings of colourful balloons, pineapple-shaped paper plates and a Tiki Pinata (from the CostumeBox vaults). Leis can also add to your Hawaiian theme and having a big pile of these at the front door (one for each guest) is a lovely idea.

You can also hang a colourful ALOHA banner on the wall, cover one of the walls with a bamboo cane (purchased from a plant nursery) and add blow-up palm trees around the patio and pool. Trestle tables with Hawaiian inspired tablecloths or runners are another fabulous idea, but you can also attach grass skirts to the edge of these tables (just snip the waistband and then pin them along the edge of the table). Clay plant pots painted to look like Tiki faces can be filled with ice and drinks, and lots and lots of fresh flowering tropical plants help to give your Hawaiian party decorations an authentic feel.

Now you know how to decorate a Hawaiian party, let’s take a look at how to select the perfect Hawaiian party outfit for the big day.

How to dress up for a Hawaiian theme party

Part of the fun is going to be seeing all your guests dressed in their Hawaiian Luau outfits, but what will you wear?

There are lots of options available, such as Hawaiian shirts, sarongs, grass skirts, coconut bras, straw hats and floral dresses. The most obvious choice might be a grass skirt and coconut bra for the ladies, but a lovely floral patterned swimsuit or bikini with a sarong tied around the waist is also a great option.

The vaults at CostumeBox also have lots of fabulous ideas for Hawaiian costumes, hula skirts and leis, so you won’t have any problems coming up with the best Hawaiian party outfit for your party. Knowing that CostumeBox has you covered when your guests ask you how to dress up for a Hawaiian theme party – you can point them in the right direction!

Music and dancing for your Hawaiian theme party

The icing on the crown of your Hawaiian party is the music. This is really going to get everyone in the mood for a Luau party! It’s even better if you find a video of Hula dancing on YouTube, play it on the TV outside in your entertainment area and get everyone to follow the dance moves – it makes an awesome photo or video to post on Facebook. Your selection of music can include The Beach Boys, Elvis’s Blue Hawaii, Pearly Shells, and Don Ho Gold (traditional Hawaiian music), but any Polynesian or beach music will help to set the atmosphere.
