With Book Week only a few months away (20th-26th August 2022), it's never too early to get your costume prepared for your school’s 2022 Book Week Costume Parade. You might be thinking: “What do I dress my child in for this year's Book Week theme: Dreaming With Eyes Open?” or even “what should I wear for a teacher’s Book Week costume?”. Well, here at CostumeBox, we’ve made it easy for you with our top Book Week Costume Ideas for kids and teachers to match the theme.

Before we dive in, what does it mean to “dream with eyes open”? Simply put, it means to live out your imagination and dreams while you’re awake! When you read a book, you create images in your mind or see the images on the page of a picture book and you’re immediately transported to other worlds. For a more interpretive take, it can also mean bringing your own dreams to life - whether it’s what you want (or wanted) to be when you’re older: such as a Police officer, a mermaid or alien, or the land you dream of living in: Wonderland, medieval times, Hogwarts, and more.

Read below for CostumeBox’s 7 top Book Week costume ideas so you can Dream With Eyes Open this Book Week:

1. Dreamtime Stories & Australian Animals

Not all stories were originally written or read from a page, some are verbally passed down throughout generations. Australian Indigenous Dreamtime stories about the creation of the world and life itself are such stories. Browse our great range of Australian animals to explore this Book Week Dreaming theme. Think kangaroo costumes, koala costumes, cockatoo costumes, crocodiles, (hungry) caterpillars and serpents.

2. Alice in Wonderland

What better way to encompass the ‘’Dreaming with Eyes Open” theme than with a story featuring a girl that dreams of a wonderful land. Bring the dream to life and dress as Alice herself in an Alice Costume, or choose from the many characters Alice meets on her adventures through the looking glass such as a Cheshire Cat costume, a Mad Hatter costume or a Queen of Hearts costume for Book Week 2022.

3. The Wizard of Oz

Another great dreamy Book Week costume idea is a character from the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy is a young girl from Kansas who finds herself in a fantasy land she’s dreamed of. Find Dorothy’s gorgeous blue dress and her sparkly ruby red slippers, Wicked Witch of the West costumes and Glinda costumes in our Book Week range that are perfect for this year’s dreamy Book Week theme. The Wizard of Oz story also has great male characters too such as the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow for your Book Week event.

4. Harry Potter

No doubt, your kids have been waiting for their Hogwarts letter so now is the time to make their dreams come true with a Harry Potter costume for the Book Week Parade. They can choose from any Hogwarts House robes including Gryffindor robes for the loyal and brave, Slytherin robes for the ambitious and cunning, Ravenclaw robes for the wise, or Hufflepuff robes for the friendly and fair. We have a range of Harry Potter costumes including Professor McGonagall costumes, Bellatrix Lestrange costumes, Death Eaters, Voldemort and more if you prefer to be a more adventurous choice of character for Book Week.

5. When I Grow Up

Maybe it’s your child’s dream to be a doctor or nurse, a police officer, a firefighter or an astronaut. Dress them up in any of our occupation and uniform costumes to let them live their future dreams early on.

6. Mythical Creatures

Speaking of letting kids live their dreams, maybe they really, really dream of being a mermaid when they grow up. A fairy, a dragon or a werewolf might also be the stuff of their daydreams. Be sure to check out our range of mythical creatures costumes for your child to transform into their favourite mythical creatures and have a magical, dreamy time at Book Week 2022.

7. Fairy Tales

Take a dive into any fairy tale story with classic favourite costumes such as Snow White costumes, Red Riding Hood costumes, Cinderella or Hansel and Gretel costumes, or the dreamiest of them all: Sleeping Beauty costumes. Your little one could become Peter Pan and escape with their dreams to Neverland, or a fiery dragon costume to guard the castle.

And there you have it, our top 7 Book Week costume ideas for kids and teachers for this year’s Book Week 2022 theme: Dreaming with Eyes Open.
