3. Shrunken Head Punch (Mulled Wine or Sangria)

Keep your head while you’re party prepping with this spooky shrunken head punch recipe. Your guests will be head over heels wanting more when they taste this winning punch.

Alternate recipe for warmer weather: use any Sangria recipe instead of mulled wine.

Ingredients:

Shrunken Heads:

  • 6 apples
  • 3 cups Lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsp Salt

Mulled Wine:

  • Bottle of inexpensive Merlot
  • 1 Large orange
  • Maple syrup or honey
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks
  • 3 Star anise
  • 4 Cloves
  • Optional garnish: whole cranberries or black grapes or cherries, and dry ice.

Method:

Shrunken heads:

1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius and line a tray with baking paper.

2. Peel apples then core and cut in half.

3. Carve facial features into the round side of the apple halves.

4. Mix lemon juice and salt in a bowl and dip the apples into the mixture.

5. Place on prepared tray and place in oven for 30 minutes or until the apple heads look dehydrated and shrunken.

Mulled wine:

1. Cut orange in half. Take one half and slice into rounds, leave the other half whole.

2. Place orange slices into the bottom of a pot and squeeze in juice from the other orange half.

3. Pour wine into the pot and add cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves and 2 Tbsp of maple syrup or honey.

4. Warm the mixture over medium heat for 5 minutes until steaming and small bubbles appear. Lower heat immediately.

5. Taste and add more maple syrup or honey to suit your taste. Warm for further 5-10 minutes to increase spicy flavour if desired.

6. Transfer to a punch bowl (or cauldron) and add shrunken apple heads and garnishes (if using).

7. Serve with ladle into mugs or your themed Halloween drinkware.
