Pirates as we know them are the unlawful scourge of the seas. They have been around since 1400 BCE and piracy continues to this day. There were English pirates, Spanish pirates, French pirates, Turkish pirates and more.
What’s another name for a pirate? Well there are different types, with privateers, buccaneers and corsairs dominant between the 1500s to early 1800s. Privateers, buccaneers and corsairs are mostly similar in that they are ‘legal pirates’ who loot and plunder ships, but do so under the protection of their government:
- Privateers were soundly lawful in their practice and came from either France, Spain or England. The letters of Marquee they carried denoted their government’s approval to attack and plunder enemy ships. Some famous privateers include Francis Drake, Amaro Pargo and Robert Surcouf.
- Buccaneers were French and English privateers who weren’t always lawful in their privateering and were highly active in the Caribbean, looting Spanish settlements both by land and sea. Buccaneers also carried letters of Marquee, however sometimes operated in grey areas of governmental legality. Henry Morgan, an English buccaneer was considered by the English a hero and by the Spanish, a mass murderer.
- Alternatively, Corsairs were either French privateers or Barbary pirates operating from areas a part of the Ottoman Empire.
- Barbary pirates operated out of North Africa and mainly operated as slave traders, going from the West African seaboard, through the Mediterranean and as far as Ireland to capture slaves.
