How to make a scary Halloween prop

There’s a whole armoury of grisly weapons that can be incorporated into your haunted house on Halloween, you just need a little imagination and a sprinkle of creepy know-how. So let’s take a look at ten of the most horrifying and gruesome scenes you can set in your home and scare the living daylights out of everyone this Halloween - let the games begin!

 

  • Blood-thirsty bathroom horrors

 

Can you imagine how your guests will feel when they are faced with your blood strewn bathroom? There’s going to be hell to pay this Halloween! To put together your horror murder scene you will need lots and lots of blood! So buy some fake blood and then hang a towel, bath mat and shower curtain on the washing line outside. Then spray these items with the blood so that it looks like an arterial spray that went all around the room with a few bloody handprints for good measure. You can even hide a skeleton prop in the bath with its skeletal hand hanging over the side and covered in blood. Hang these items in your bathroom and wait for the shrieks to begin!

 

  • Dead bodies hanging in the garage

 

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without at least one dead body, but you can have as many corpses as you like! To give real authenticity to your haunted house you can hang these costume props in the garage, so that when people walk up your driveway, they will see them hanging in the darkness (maybe add a few battery operated candles to cast a flickering light on the corpses and increase the creepiness factor). You could also hide a few corpses behind the sofa, but let them stick out enough so that they will be noticed by your guests. Another option is to hide them in the pantry or stack them on sun loungers around the pool – anywhere they will create the right amount of breathless terror in your guests.

So how do you make these dead bodies? All you need is old clothing, packing foam and metres of clear plastic. Fill the clothes with the packing foam, spray some fake blood over the clothes, wrap them in the clear plastic tied with rope or nylon string (duct tape will also do a good job), and leave the corpses dotted around your haunted house. Don’t forget to stab a few of the corpses with bloody daggers and leave the daggers sticking out of a few of the corpses!

 

  • Headless corpses in the garden!

 

If you are organising a camp site in your garden for Halloween to scare the living daylights out of everyone, a headless corpse and bloody chainsaw are awesome Halloween props! They will provide the right amount of terror to satisfy any gruesome soul. So for this to work, you need to fill old clothes with packing foam – jeans and a jumper or shirt are best, and shoes or trainers as well. Once it’s all put together, spray some fake blood on the neck area (remember it doesn’t have a head!) and position it so that only the feet can be seen at the edge of the lights in the garden. When someone notices and goes to investigate, they will see a bloody headless corpse with a bloody chainsaw next to the body.

 

  • Macabre hooded reaper with bloody machete

 

How about a life size Grim Reaper wielding a bloody machete, sickle or scythe standing just inside the doorway to your haunted house? For this to work you’re going to need to create a Grim Reaper, which isn’t as difficult as you might think. All you need to do is source a 6 foot piece of timber and nail a bar about shoulder level across it. Then place a bucket over the end of the vertical timber to give the shape of a head. Next fill a bucket with concrete or bricks to hold the entire framework upright. Finally, throw your Grim Reaper hooded costume over the frame, attach your weapon of choice to one of the crossbars and you have a macabre Grim Reaper waiting to welcome your guests on All Hallows Eve.

 

  • Screaming ghost face in a jar

 

This must be one of the most ghoulish costume props ever! Can you imagine what your guests will say when they catch notice of the screaming ghost face from the Scream movies in a big jar hidden in a dark spot in your home - maybe next to the toilet? To make one of these creepy Halloween decorations you will need a big jar with a lid, a screaming ghost face from CostumeBox and enough bloody water to fill the jar. Just place the screaming ghost face inside the jar and fill it with the bloody water, then screw on the top. It’s going to be absolutely hideous when someone finds it!

This is an easy skeleton prop to make, because all you need is a glow-in-the-dark skeleton costume, stuffed with packing foam to make it look like a corpse. Sit it on a chair by the front door and have it hold a ninja sword. You could also hang it from the guttering using a bloody rope, then tie another rope around the waist and feed it through a nearby window – then set the skeleton swinging as your guests approach the door! For something totally funny, you could have a pair of witches legs sticking out of the one of the bushes in front of your haunted house with a broomstick nearby! Make the legs out of stiff cardboard rolled into tubes and filled with packing foam, then roll some thick black and white striped stockings or leggings to cover the cardboard, attach an old pair of ladies shoes to the end and poke them into the bushes or hedge. A great touch is to lean a witch’s broomstick next to the upturned legs and it will look just as if a witch crash landed into your bushes and her broom went flying!
