Got your bell bottoms, groovy hair style and boogie tunes ready? Now it’s time to prepare the drinks! With disco fever at an all time high, this decade was all about the sleazy cocktail, nom nom.

1. Pina Colada

The most well known cocktail of the 70s was the Pina Colada. Still loved among many-a-beach-goer, this classic cocktail translates to “strained pineapple.”

You'll Need:

  • 60ml White Rum
  • 15ml Pure Sugar Cane Syrup
  • 100ml Pineapple Juice
  • 25ml Cream of Coconut
  • 15ml Lime Juice
  • 10ml Cream
  • Pinch of Salt
  • A Poce Grande Glass
  • Optional slice of pineapple, mint and/or cherry.

Directions:
Although there appears to be a lot of ingredients, all you have to do is blend them together with ice and then pour into a chilled glass. Garnish and add a tiny umbrella for those beachy vibes.

We have made it super easy for you by creating a Pina Colada bundle.

2. Slow Screw

It is said that someone, somewhere in the 70s added Sloe Gin to the popular “screwdriver” cocktail, thus creating the “Slow Screw.” A fun twist on a classic cocktail that’s sure to be a hit.

You’ll Need:

  • 30ml Gin
  • 30ml Vodka
  • Orange Juice
  • Orange Slice or Peel

Directions:
Fill a highball glass with ice, then add the vodka and gin. Top with orange juice, stir, and garnish with an orange slice or peel. Mmmm now that’s a slow screw.

An interesting write up about the Screw family here.

3. Harvey Wallbanger

Although originally created in the 50s, this cocktail stood the test of time after being heavily advertised in 1973 to push the sale of Galliano.

You’ll Need:

  • 40ml Vodka
  • 20ml Galliano
  • Orange Juice
  • Orange Slice
  • Maraschino Cherry

Directions:
Fill a tall glass with ice, then add the vodka, orange juice, and give it a stir. Float the galliano on top by slowly pouring over the ice. Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.

4. Negroni

Growing incredibly popular in the 1970s, the Negroni is high up on the drinks list of every restaurant and bar to this day. Originating back in 1919 when Italian, Count Camillo Negroni, asked to have his Americano cocktail strengthened to include gin rather than soda.

You’ll Need:

  • 30ml Gin
  • 30ml Vermouth
  • 30ml Campari
  • An old fashioned glass (if you have one)
  • Orange Slice

Directions:
Stir all the ingredients together with ice and garnish with a slice of orange. To do justice to the alcohol you can opt for a large ice sphere (rather than multiple cubes of ice) to help keep the ice from quickly melting and leading to a watery cocktail. No one likes a watery cocktail, nah-ah.

Alternatively, try our Australian Craft Negroni Cocktail or premixed Negroni.

5. Moscow Mule

Thanks to the vodka craze of the 70s, the Moscow Mule had a comeback after being invented in the 40s. The name is thought to be a nod to the Vodka loving Russians and that ginger beer KICK.

You’ll Need:

  • 60ml Vodka
  • 180ml Ginger Beer
  • 15ml Fresh Lime Juice
  • Garnish of lime wedge and mint
  • Serve preferably in a copper mug

Directions:
Fill a copper mug with ice and vodka, top with ginger beer and squeeze in the lime. Top with a lime wedge and a few mint leaves. Why copper? Well, copper is a conductor, meaning the cold temperature spreads rapidly through the mug, making the drink seemingly more cold and refreshing - ahhhhh nice!

6. Tequila Sunrise

Mick Jagger was spotted sipping a Tequila Sunrise in 1972 while partying at a San Francisco bar, then the Eagles released a song called "Tequila Sunrise" in 1973. Could these be the reasons this fun party drink became so popular in the 70s? Perhaps!

You’ll Need:

  • 40ml Tequila
  • 100ml Orange Juice
  • Dash of Grenadine
  • Orange Slice
  • Maraschino Cherry (must have!)

Directions:
Pour tequila and orange juice into a tall glass. Mix before adding a scoop of ice. Carefully drizzle the grenadine down the inside edge of the glass. You can use the back of a teaspoon to help slow pour. Garnish with a slice of orange and perfectly placed maraschino cherry.

7. Old Fashioned

You’ll Need:

  • 60ml Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 1 Sugar Cube (alternatively, can use sugar syrup)
  • Dash of soda
  • Angostura Bitters
  • Orange Peel and optional Maraschino Cherry

Directions:
Pop a sugar cube in a rock glass with a splash of bitters and a splash of soda, then muddle it with the nearest muddling utensil (or the back of a spoon). Rotate the glass to spread the sugar granules and bitters to coat the bottom of the glass. Add a large ice cube and the Bourbon. Stir. Pop an orange peel on top.
If you don’t like the thought of sugar granules in the bottom of your glass, sugar syrup works well too.
